A New Baby Checklist: What You Actually Need in the First Months

Baby crib and nursery

The lists of “must-have” baby gear can feel endless and expensive. The truth is, newborns need surprisingly little. Here is a realistic checklist of what you actually need in the first few months — and what can wait.

Feeding

Whether you breastfeed, bottle-feed, or both, a few good bottles, a bottle brush, and plenty of bibs and muslin cloths cover the basics. Add a comfortable feeding pillow if it helps you.

Sleeping

A safe place to sleep — a crib or bassinet with a firm mattress and fitted sheets — is the priority. Keep it simple and clutter-free; skip the extras and focus on safe, comfortable sleep.

Changing

Stock up on nappies, wipes, and a changing mat, plus a gentle barrier cream. A dedicated changing spot with everything within reach makes those frequent changes much easier.

Bath and care

A small baby bath, a couple of soft hooded towels, gentle baby wash, and a soft brush are all you need at first. Add baby nail scissors and a digital thermometer for peace of mind.

What can wait

Lots of toys, shoes, and gadgets can come later — newborns mostly need feeding, sleeping, changing, and cuddles. Buy the essentials first and add extras as you learn what your baby actually likes.
